End of the World?

So, Tuesday, me and some friends were talking on the bus about the end of the world and that stuff about the Mayan calendar.

Why are people so winded up about this subject??

The possibility for the world to end in December 2012 is as big as if the world would end tomorrow 7pm just because some old philosopher said so 5000 years ago (and OMG you know what?? He has never been wrong, so he couldn’t just be making this up to scare people…NOO).

A little piece of fact: The Mayans used several calendars for different cycles, the Tzolk’in, the Haab’ and The Long Count Calendar (probably unnamed by the Mayans). The first ones measured cycles of 52 years and did not enable accurate recording of history, since 52 years are shorter than one human lifetime. Therefore they used the Long Count Calendar instead, that measured over a thousands of years, counting from the Mayan creation date (somewhere around 3114 BC).  After this it gets more and more complex, so instead of trying to explain everything I recommend you read this link. The cataclysm in 2012 is a simple misinterpretation and belongs to some New Age hobo shit. December 21, 2012 is simply the last day of the 13th b’ak’tun (again, read the link). But that is not even the end of the Long Count Calendar because there is still 14th through 20th b’ak’tuns left to come. A nice citation: “for the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle“. Sounds like a real catastrophe, eh?

Nothing is going to happen when the Mayan calendar ends; not a new age; not the end. Nothing. There is a HUGE lot of calendars in the world, every single one of them has its own cycle. For instance, the old Swedish rune calendar had a cycle of 19 years. Nothing happened when it reached the end… The Mayan calendar is just very old and very complex with a cycle of thousands of years, and is very hard to translate. If you look things up a bit, you will see that there are a few 100% true facts about the Mayan calendar, but most of them are theories. Of course the newspapers only scream about the one least possible theory about the end of the world because it gives them lots and lots of readers. Think about that.

December 21st, at 11:11 am in 2012 I will be eating cake and laugh at all the bastards who are shitting their pants awaiting a theoretical rain of comets. mohah.
